No, this is NOT a typo! The FSDB Dragons Football team won 90-86 last night at Countryside Christian (Gainesville, FL). Not a single soul at the game last night will ever forget it!
"You would have found more defense played in a Madden video game set on "easy" mode than in the game last night," joked Head Coach Eric LeFors. "I only say that half-jokingly. Both offenses were on fire last night."
The Dragons started the game with the ball, and the Minutemen promptly stopped them, forcing a 4-and-out possession. After that, the teams traded touchdowns. Countryside easily scored on FSDB, while the Dragons had to fight for their touchdowns.
Countryside led 33-30 at halftime and went on a barrage to start the second half, going up 47-30. FSDB made many mistakes, and the Minutemen took advantage of the miscues.
For the rest of the 3rd quarter and up to the latter stages of the 4th quarter, touchdowns kept being traded with very short possessions. The Dragons were eating up chunks of yards on the ground while the Minutemen had a more balanced approach.
The league FSDB plays in does not allow kick-offs; this is to minimize injuries. So, the way for teams in the league to execute an "onside kick" is to have one offensive play from your own 20-yard line. The team must gain at least 15 yards to keep possession of the ball. If you fail to gain 15 yards, you lose possession, and the opposing team starts in your territory.
Once FSDB got the score to 78-86, they started to do the "onside kick" play. They attempted three of those and converted two of them. The only time they didn't convert, they managed to get the ball back immediately after Countryside fumbled away their first offensive play. That was how FSDB managed to reel off 20 unanswered points to snatch victory from their clenched fists!!
The Dragons last score came with 13 seconds left on the game clock. Everyone in attendance knew there was too much time left for them based on how their offense played the entire game. And they had a time-out left. Countryside's first play went for about 20 yards. Their second play was an incomplete pass. The game's final play came with three seconds left on the clock, and the Minutemen had 40 yards to go. The Dragon defense stepped up and sacked the quarterback. Pandemonium broke loose on the FSDB sideline!!!
"I am still in disbelief that we managed to win this game," exclaimed Coach LeFors. "Kudos to the boys for continuing to play hard and for believing in the coaches when we kept telling them, "IT IS NOT OVER!"
The Dragons next game will be on October 7 at the Alabama School for the Deaf in Talladega, AL. Kickoff is at 2:00 pm CST.
