Dragons Beat St. Augustine in Final Minute

2/28/2024 9:07:00 AM

The Dragons Flag Football team improved to 2-0 on the season, beating the St. Augustine Yellow Jackets in the last minute of the game, 14-7!

The Dragons started the game with the ball but were stopped almost immediately, as if the opposing team knew their game plan. The Jackets played excellent defense throughout the game and scored a touchdown in the second quarter to take a 7-0 lead.

"We couldn't make progress in the first half, but our defense held strong after St. Augustine scored," said Head Coach Chris Lennon.

The Jackets almost scored another touchdown, but Markiel Jordan (MJ) made a huge play, rushing the quarterback. MJ fell, got back up, and ran across the field to pull the flag and prevent a touchdown! The Dragons were able to stop them and get the ball back.

The Dragons were down 7-0 at halftime, and St. Augustine got the ball to start the 3rd quarter. The defense played amazingly and made another stop. The Dragons offense improved but still couldn't score.

In the fourth quarter, with only 7 minutes left on the clock, the Dragons finally scored and tied the game 7-7. With 5 minutes to go, the Yellow Jackets made their way to the red zone. Our key player of the game, MJ, made another big play and forced a sack, pushing St. Augustine further from the goal line. The Dragons stopped them and got the ball back with only two minutes left.

FSDB had to move quickly, with little time left on the clock. They made their way down the field, and with less than a minute remaining, Quarterback Mariska Dize tossed a pass across the middle of the field to Kayla Debrow, who scampered past the defense into the endzone. The Dragons took the lead 14-7 with only 25 seconds left!

St. Augustine tried to move the ball but was unsuccessful as time expired.

"It was a tough game, but our Dragons never gave up; they played hard, and their performance reflected it!" Coach Lennon stated. "They deserve a loud cheer for their win!"

The Dragons next game will be at home on Thursday, February 29, against the Pedro Menendez Falcons.
