Joyce "Sporty" Houghton

  • One of the best all-around athlete ever in the FSDB history.
  • Made a total of 1,169 points during her 4-year basketball career (1977-1980).
  • Holds FSDB Girls Track Records as of May 10, 2023 as follows:
    • 1 Mile Run at 6:09 (1978)
    • 440-Yd Relay at 52.2 (1980)
  • Freshman Year in 1977
    • Basketball-Most Improvement Player
    • Selected to be the National Deaf Mythical Champions for the Girls Track & Field
  • Sophomore Year in 1978
    • Won State 880-Yd Relay with a time of 1:50.7 (Broke State Record)
    • FSDB Girls Track Team won the 2nd place in State Track Meet
    • Won the National Deaf Mythical Championship for Girls Track and Field (Cheryl Johnson was the Head Track Coach.)
    • 2nd place in the Girls Mason-Dixon Basketball Tournament
    • All-Conference in Girls Basketball
    • Won Best Sprinter Award 
  • Junior Year in 1979
    • MVP in Volleyball, Basketball, & Track and Field
    • Best Field Goal Percentage and Rebound
    • National Top Shooter - Selected on Deaf Prep Girls Basketball All-American Team-Highest average 27.3 points per game
    • MVP and All-Tournament in the Girls Mason-Dixon Basketball Tournament in which she was the top rebounder, total of 45 caroms in 3 games for the new record.
  • Senior Year in 1980
    • MVP in Volleyball, Basketball, & Track and Field
    • All-Tournament Award in Mason-Dixon Basketball Tournament
    • All-American in Girls Basketball by The Deaf American Magazine for 3 years (1978-1980)
    • FSDB Girls Track Team won the 2nd place in the State Meet
    • 1st Place in Long Jump in the State Track Meet.
    • Was selected the Athlete of the Year presented by Tampa Bay Deaf Club. 
  • After graduating from FSDB in 1980, she participated in the Deaflympics three times:
    • 1981 – Silver in the Pentathlon
    • 1985 – Bronze in the Long Jump
    • 1989 – 4th Place in the Heptathlon and 5th Place in the Long Jump 
  • Was Selected the MVP in Track & Field at Gallaudet University. Still Holds the Heptathlon Record since 1984. 
  • Participated in the five various International Competitions and won many medals such as gold (LJ in 1986 and 1990 and 4x100 Relay in 1990); silver (Shot Put in 1990); and bronze (LJ in 1984 & 1986 & 4x100m Relay in 1984 and Shot Put in 1986) medals.
