Thomas Hines Colemen (1853-1926) – Honorary Staff Member

  • Founder of FSDB in 1885. He graduated from SCSDB in 1877 and from  then-Gallaudet College (now Gallaudet University) in 1882. 
  • Prior to establishing FSDB, he wrote to Governor W. D. Bloxham in 1882 to help establish the school. 
  • In 1883, Governor Bloxham convinced the legislature to set aside $20,000 toward the goal for the establishment of the school. 
  • In 1883-1884, St. Augustine made the best offer for $1,000 in cash and five acres of land donated by Captain Edward Eugene Vaill. The site of the school was chosen and still standing today. 
  • Chief Teacher at FSDB (1885-1888) and Teacher at SCSDB (1888-1907).
  • On May 28, 1965, the FSDB Health Care Center (HCC) was dedicated and named after Mr. Coleman.
